A day at the park

We're fortunate to have a park right around the corner from our house. We decided to snap a few (million) shots of James...

Washington D.C.

So Doug was gone a good portion of the month of April. A bunch of random trips including golf, work, and church were all to blame, so I decided to tag along on Doug's last trip to Washington D.C. It happens to be the place some of our dearest friends and family live and a visit was long overdue.

Doug and I had been there at least once when we were in High School, so we didn't feel the need to see all the memorials again. It was nice being able to take our time and visit the things we either missed before or enjoyed so much we wanted to do it again. We visited all the major museums (American History, Natural History, Air & Space, Printing and Engraving, etc), went to the D.C. temple, and cheered at a Nationals baseball game.

Our little family at the D.C. temple

James is pointing to the place he had just seen his face. Yep, we made it on the big screen!

Some of my random observations:
1. I love that everyone walks or bikes there. It seems like it works for them. Too bad that would never work in the Houston burbs.
2. Everyone dresses up! I felt like a 2nd class citizen because I was wearing jeans instead of a top-notch business suit!
3. Their food is sooo good. We had the most amazing breakfast at D.C.'s Eastern Market, milkshakes at Ketchup, and appetizers and dessert at Ebbitt's Grill (thanks Ryan and Lisa for the suggestion)
This was bread pudding from Ebbitt's Grill. I meant to take a picture when it came out but we couldn't control ourselves. So good!

This is the view right outside our hotel room. Not bad, huh?

**Thanks to Mary, Ryan, Becky, Mike, Bethany, and Ben for making our trip sooo great! It was good to see you all. Now it's your turn to come to Houston!

James LOVES country music

Don't ask me how it happened. I did not listen to country music while he was in the womb. In fact, Doug and I barely ever listen to it, but there's no denying it. James LOVES country music.

It all started last Christmas. We were helping my mom set up her Christmas tree, so holding true to tradition, we were listening to a Randy Travis Christmas CD that my parents got at one of his concerts forever ago. James has always liked dancing (bouncing) to other types of music, but as soon as the country twang started, he was hooked! He stood right in front of the CD player and danced till he was almost out of breath. Even the slow songs were exciting and dance worthy. At the time, we thought it was cute but didn't think too much of it. We were just happy he wasn't trying to get into the ornaments.

Then last week, James went to his first rodeo concert. Our brother in law got tickets to see Keith Urban (thanks again Ryan!). It was last minute so we couldn't get a babysitter but we figured we'd take James and just leave whenever he got fussy. Little did we know that James would have more fun than us! He was getting restless during the rodeo events beforehand but suddenly the lights went low and the fireworks started. James loved looking at the lights and eventually started dancing. He was bouncing up and down and shaking his head. It was really entertaining to watch. By the way, we also saw Judd (one of the cowboys on the Amazing Race) riding a bull and John Wayne Schultz (made top 40 on American Idol) sang a little on the big screen.

If you're still not convinced, here's the clincher. I was watching American Idol last week while James was on his own, playing with his toys. Scotty McCreery (a country singer with a crazy low voice) started singing "The River" and James dropped whatever he was doing, went right up to the TV, and started dancing! As soon as the song was over, he went back to his toys like nothing had happened. Now when we're in the car, we might turn on some country every now and then and can see his eyes light up every time. I guess those country roots go deeper than I thought!
