A Bird's Eye View of the BBQ Pits

Julie and I went to the last day of the three day kickoff BBQ event that the Houston Livestock and Rodeo uses to draw crowds of over 200,000. It is a fun and festive atmosphere, but there are hundreds of teams there to vie for the title of World's Championship Bar-B-Que Contest Grand Champion.

Trophies are given to teams in a number of categories, including brisket, chicken, and spare ribs. My personal favorite type of BBQ is the pulled pork or the sausage. They also give an award for the most creative or crazy "BBQ Pit".

Some booths did more to get attention than others

They have a public chuckwagon open to the public to try some sub-par BBQ, but you have to know one of the team sponsors to try the good stuff. Fortunately we were able to befriend a gentleman in the "Chevy Cookers" team who was kind enough to invite us to their tent (the red tarp made it glow red inside). They had all kinds of sumptuous meats, but their sausage was phenomenal.

First Time Sculling!

This week I was working a booth at the National Association of Bilingual Educators in Austin, TX and my friend Derrin got the idea that we should all learn how to row. So the next morning we did just that!

The Houston Skyline

Since I have finally been approved as a certified vendor (it took a year due to tie ups with the IT department) by the ludicrously large Houston Independent School District, I get to see a lot of the Houston skyline as I'm driving. I think it can be gorgeous, and I might as well do something while I'm sitting in traffic!
