A Bird's Eye View of the BBQ PitsJulie and I went to the last day of the three day kickoff BBQ event that the Houston Livestock and Rodeo uses to draw crowds of over 200,000. It is a fun and festive atmosphere, but there are hundreds of teams there to vie for the title of World's Championship Bar-B-Que Contest Grand Champion.
Trophies are given to teams in a number of categories, including brisket, chicken, and spare ribs. My personal favorite type of BBQ is the pulled pork or the sausage. They also give an award for the most creative or crazy "BBQ Pit".
Some booths did more to get attention than others
They have a public chuckwagon open to the public to try some sub-par BBQ, but you have to know one of the team sponsors to try the good stuff. Fortunately we were able to befriend a gentleman in the "Chevy Cookers" team who was kind enough to invite us to their tent (the red tarp made it glow red inside). They had all kinds of sumptuous meats, but their sausage was phenomenal.
